A feeling of tightness and shortness of breath in your chest are common COPD symptoms and are the major COPD warning signs, says pulmonologist Barry Make, MD, professor of medicine in pulmonary sciences and critical care medicine at the University of Colorado Denver and director of respiratory care and co-director of the COPD program at National Jewish Medical and Research Center.

These COPD warning signs can appear when you’re climbing stairs or simply walking, but it’s also possible to experience them when you’re not doing anything at all.
