Turn off your phone in traffic
“I like to think of this like the Dutch reclaiming the sea,” says Roberts. “A little bit at a time. Small victories.” If you want to drive, then turn off your phone and pay attention to the traffic.
As you already know, using your phone while driving is totally irresponsible and this behavior can also be legally punishable. So, driving can be a way to give up your phone for at least a few hours or minutes… so in this case, this is a small but sure victory.
Nevertheless, driving can improve your ability to concentrate, so you can use your car even for short trips. At least, you won’t use your phone anymore.
Forget about Instagram pictures while eating
I guess we all have that kind of friend who starts to take a lot of pictures when the food arrives… or maybe you are that friend. Anyway, you have to stop this annoying behavior, especially when you are at a restaurant with someone. You should enjoy the moment and interact with other people without taking food pictures, right? “Sometimes taking a picture becomes more important than experiencing the event itself,” says Roberts.
According to U.S. researchers, Instagramming your food can make it less enjoyable to eat. “When we Instagram, we inherently must focus our attention on the item in the picture, even for that very brief moment. This can have a range of effects on later enjoyment,” co-author Professor Joseph Redden explains to The Independent. “However, if we spend too much time repeatedly viewing such foods, our paper suggests this can lead to pre-satiation. That is, you’re already a bit tired of the food before you even start eating it.”
