#6 Myth: Vaccines can cause autism

Unfortunately, some parents think that vaccines can cause autism and “that’s absolutely ridiculous,” Dr. Fisher says. The rumor stems from a small, flawed 1997 study published by Andrew Wakefield, a British surgeon. The study only examined 12 children and didn’t include a control group to pinpoint the cause of their symptoms.

An investigation by British medical journal BMJ found that the lead author had altered the kids’ medical histories. The study was later formally retracted by 10 of its 13 original authors, and a large number of studies have since found no link between vaccines and autism.
