3. Rabies

Although rabies vaccines for pets, which were introduced in the 1920s, have helped make the disease extremely rare in our world, this tremendous condition remains a serious health problem in India and in some parts of Africa. According to Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), rabies is a fatal but preventable viral disease.

“It destroys the brain, it’s a really, really bad disease,” Muhlberger said. “We have a vaccine against rabies, and we have antibodies that work against rabies, so if someone gets bitten or scratched by a rabid animal we can treat this person,” she said. However, she said, “if you don’t get treatment, there’s a 100 percent possibility you will die.” In the United States, rabies is mostly found in wild animals like bats, raccoons, skunks and foxes.
