According to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), there were 20.4 million U.S. veterans in 2016. Around 9 million of them are registered at VA health services. Some come in for minor health issues such as burns or cuts, while others face much more serious illnesses.
“Veterans experience mental health disorders, substance use disorders, post-traumatic stress, and traumatic brain injury at disproportionate rates compared to their civilian counterparts,” says Maria Olenick, PhD, RN, Chair-Undergraduate Nursing & Clinical Associate Professor at Florida International University.
