According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease, gallstones are hard, pebble-like pieces of material, typically made of cholesterol or bilirubin, that develop in your gallbladder. They can block the duct into the intestine, resulting in pain.
“If the gallbladder is inflamed, any contraction of that nature will be amplified and typically will cause pain to the patient,” says Vivek Kaul, MD, acting chief of the division of gastroenterology and hepatology at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, N.Y.
