Myth: Citrus fruits are the best foods for strengthening the immune system.
This is just a myth that people should stop believing. Citrus fruits, such as lemons, oranges, limes and grapefruits, are not only delicious, but they are also nutritious, as they are rich in vitamin C. Of course, citrus fruits are some of the healthiest fruits out there that can help you boost your immune system, but they are not the only ones.
According to Briana Rodriquez, RD at Jenny Craig, “these are great to reach for when you’re looking for a sweet pick-me-up, but they aren’t the only foods that can support immune system health by helping you to get sick less and also helping to shorten the duration if you do.”
Red peppers, garlic, carrots and chicken are also good for your overall health, especially when it comes to improving your immune system. For instance, carrots contain vitamin A, which is essential for your body health. “Vitamin A precursors like carotenoids (beta-carotene) are important antioxidants that strengthen immune function and can help our bodies fight off infections,” added Rodriquez. Chicken is an excellent source of zinc and vitamin B6 – which are recommended to boost your immune system. “Poultry (like chicken) is chock-full of it. It also contains vitamin B6, which is important to the formation of new and healthy red blood cells.”
