5. Frozen shoulder

Frozen shoulder or medically speaking, adhesive capsulitis is a condition that limits your range of motion. As the name suggests, the shoulder feels frozen in place. According to Dr. Tanaka, this inflammation of the lining of the shoulder joint presents in three stages:

  • The freezing stage, which is actually characterized by pain during movement
  • The frozen stage, during which the shoulder isn’t able to move in some directions
  • The thawing stage, when your range of motion starts to improve

“It is typically not associated with a major injury,” she says, “though some patients report having a minor ‘tweak’ that seems to set off the symptoms.” It affects 2 to 5 percent of the population, and it’s more common in women 40 to 60 and in people with diabetes. Such as pinched nerve, adhesive capsulitis treatment include anti-inflammatory drugs, injections, and physical therapy.
