Some lifestyle gurus have started selling an ancient practice called “oil pulling” as a tooth-whitening treatment. They actually claim that swishing an expensive cold-pressed coconut oil around in your mouth—for a solid five to twenty minutes!—will pull toxins from your gums and teeth.
As you probably guessed, there’s virtually no evidence that this is the case. However, a mouthful of cold-pressed coconut oil isn’t likely to hurt you, experts say, but it definitely won’t help you in the way those online gurus are claiming that it will.
