Coffee as a Laxative
Coffee can stimulate peristalsis, that is the process in the digestive tract and that’s why drinking coffee makes us go to the bathroom. So, some people use it, because they want so, but there is a problem with this. When you stimulate peristalsis by drinking coffee increases gastric emptying and therefore the contents of the stomach are passed into the small intestines, often before the digesting food has been broken down. This can increase the chances of inflammation and irritation within the gastrointestinal tract. Caffeine is not to blame, because decaffeinated coffee has laxative and gastric emptying properties.
