Fauci believes that the chances of a vaccine to be 98 percent effective are not that great. Instead, he said during a Q&A with the Brown University School of Public Health, that he expects a vaccine that will be 75 percent effective, mentioning that 50 percent would also be ok.
For a vaccine to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration, it must be at least 50 percent effective. Also, FDA’s commissioner, Dr. Stephen Hahn said that the vaccines that will be approved will be more than 50 percent accurate.
Moreover, Fauci is also worried about the durability of the vaccine, continuing saying that if this coronavirus form is exactly like the others, a vaccine might not protect us for a long time.
While there is hope that one day we will have a more efficient vaccine available for mass use, there’s no guarantee, according to the WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
However, Fauci is very optimistic, even though he doesn’t believe that the virus will just disappear.
