Perfectionism can lead to anxiety and unhealthy, obsessive work habits, according to Samantha Smalls, a social worker and therapist at New Chapter Counseling Services in Bloomfield, Connecticut. She says being a perfectionist “adds irrational expectations to yourself.” Also, “when a perfectionist makes a mistake, it can cause anxiety, depression, and the development of negative self-talk,” she says.
