6. Constipation

Constipation can also be a symptom of celiac disease. Some people with celiac disease experience diarrhea, others constipation. It happens because this disease destroys the intestinal villi, the finger-like projections that are found in the small intestine and are actually responsible for absorbing essential nutrients.

When gluten foods arrive in the digestive tract, the intestinal villi can not get the nutrients our digestive system needs to function properly, and, instead, they absorb the moisture from the stool, leading to constipation.

Thankfully, celiac disease patients can easily avoid constipation by following a gluten-free diet.

Psst! Dehydration and a sedentary lifestyle can also result in constipation.
