Learn to listen more
You should learn to listen more and not try to fix the situation. Moreover, when someone starts to tell you what they are going through you should avoid lines like “I understand, but in my situation, I used to be like that…” Because it is not about you right now.
“One of the best things you can do as a friend, family member or support person, is to hold space for them,” said Maureen Werrbach, owner of Urban Wellness Counseling in Chicago.
Unfortunately, when we notice that someone is grieving we tend to minimize their feelings because we feel uncomfortable seeing them in pain. “But the best thing we can do is actually be a witness to their pain, acknowledge it and hold that space with them.”
According to Shelby Forsythia, author of “Permission to Grieve”, one of the most important things that we have to do when someone is suffering is to listen to them. “Allow your grieving person to tell the story of what happened over and over again. It helps them make sense of the loss.”
