Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

If you notice something strange when it comes to your enamel, it may be a sign that you suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) also known as heartburn. However, in many cases, your dentist may notice it before you do and it’s recommended that you follow their suggestions and treatments.

But how is that possible and what is the connection between your teeth and gastroesophageal reflux disease? GERD is a medical condition that occurs when your stomach acid flows back into the mouth (through the esophagus). In general, this stomach acid can irritate your esophagus and, unfortunately, can lead to decreased quality of life. What many people don’t know about stomach acid is that it can adversely affect the enamel of your teeth.

According to a recent study, patients suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) experienced tooth erosion as well. “The digestive system starts in the mouth. Dentists can see evidence of enamel breakdown with any regurgitates coming from the stomach contents up through the esophagus and into the mouth,” says Palomo.

Your dentist may also be the first person to tell you that you suffer from an eating disorder, such as bulimia – as, in fact, the process is the same, namely that when you vomit, your stomach acid affects your teeth.
