Type 1 or type 2 diabetes

Did you know that your dental condition can tell you if you suffer from type 1 or type 2 diabetes? People who suffer from diabetes are prone to cavities and tooth decay due to high blood sugar. According to statistics, approximately 30 million Americans suffer from diabetes, while 8 million don’t even know that they have this disease.

The truth is that this disease can affect your body’s ability to handle sugar. As you probably know, your body uses food to create fuel (namely sugar) for energy, but if you have diabetes, your body doesn’t produce or respond to insulin (a hormone that carries sugar to create energy). So, because your body can’t manage sugar properly, it has to deal with high blood sugar that can lead to other diseases such as dental, eye, and heart problems.

If diabetes is left untreated, you may have less saliva in your mouth, which can lead to cavities. You will also experience gum inflammation, bleeding, and infection.
