With the pandemic, according to the World Health Organization, gathering pace across the globe, two drugs have been touted as a possible cure. Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, which are used to treat malaria, have been described by President Trump as ‘game changers’.
Despite the president touting these drugs as a ‘one cures all’ panacea for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronaviruses, the director of National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Dr Anthony Fauci says evidence of the drugs’ effectiveness is only anecdotal.
The drugs may be effective against the novel coronavirus, Fauci said, but more data is needed to “show it is truly safe and effective under the conditions of Covid-19.”
