Sugar is linked to obesity, diabetes and high cholesterol and this may lead to heart disease. “The debate in cardiology has pivoted from saturated fat and cholesterol to sugar,” says Druz. “If there is one ingredient I would say anyone with heart disease or risk for heart disease must avoid, it’s added sugar in any form.”
