Alopecia areata

Another condition that can cause both hair loss and scalp-itch is called alopecia areata. Alopecia areata is basically an autoimmune disorder that causes the hair to come out. In the process, most patients feel an itchy sensation on the scalp. Some patients may have small bald spots, while others could experience complete hair loss.

Itching is actually one of the early signs of this autoimmune disorder. Dr. Zeichner suggests seeing a dermatologist if your scalp itching is also accompanied by hair loss. Bear in mind that people with seasonal allergies, thyroid disease, asthma, pernicious anemia, vitiligo, and Down syndrome are more prone to develop this condition.
