Beneficiaries who receive full Medicaid benefits or Supplemental Security Income qualify automatically for Extra Help without submitting financial documents.

Who Qualifies Automatically for Extra Help

Many people receive Extra Help benefits without ever filing an application. The government calls this group “deemed eligible” because they already meet poverty guidelines in other programs.

If you receive full Medicaid benefits from your state, you qualify for Extra Help automatically. You do not need to submit financial documents or call the Social Security Administration.

You also qualify automatically if you receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI). The Social Security Administration matches its data records and enrolls you without any paperwork.

Enrollment is also automatic if your state helps pay your Medicare Part B premium through a Medicare Savings Program. This includes programs like the Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB) program.

In 2026, the QMB monthly income limit is $1,350 for single individuals and $1,824 for married couples. If your state approves your QMB application, your Extra Help coverage triggers automatically.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) sends a purple notice to your mailbox when you qualify automatically. Keep this letter in your personal records, as it serves as proof of your subsidy status.
