2. Carpets
Do you know that rugs and carpets are a source of airborne pollution in your house? They host bacteria, dust, dust mites, pet dander and molds. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), dust mites are one of the most common indoor asthma triggers. “If you’re walking, the particles that get in there stir up and settle back down,” says Janice Nolen, assistant vice president of National Policy for the American Lung Association.
Having asthma or COPD translates to extra sensitive lungs, so a dusty carpet will make you experience an uncontrollable cough. Also, note that kids are at a higher risk of developing lung problems due to the fact that they are used to playing on a carpet. The bare minimum you need to have your carpet cleaned is every 18 months, however, when a family member deals with asthma or anything related to lung disease, you should have it cleaned more often.
