8 Reasons You Shouldn’t Ignore Your Heartburn

You should know that heartburn has nothing to do with your heart, despite its name. However, the symptoms are similar to those of a heart attack or heart disease because heartburn is a burning pain in your chest, just behind your breastbone. This pain is often worse after eating, in the evening, or when lying down or bending over.

Heartburn is an irritation of the esophagus which is the tube that connects your throat and stomach. It’s caused by stomach acid. This leads to a burning discomfort in your upper belly or below your breastbone. Usually, heartburn is caused by a problem with a muscular valve called the lower esophageal sphincter which is located where the esophagus meets the stomach.

So, when you have that burning sensation, the lower esophageal sphincter opens too often or doesn’t close tightly enough. If you experience this sensation, there are certain things that contribute to that feeling. One is overeating, which puts too much food in your stomach and the other is too much pressure on your stomach.
