While some hair loss might be hereditary, as male or female pattern hair loss, other types of hair loss can indicate a more complicated health problem. For example, there is an autoimmune disease alopecia areata, a type of alopecia that causes hair to fall out in round patches.

As the American Academy of Dermatology claims, those that suffer from this condition have an immune system that attacks their hair follicles, which causes hair loss. Luckily, if you’re suffering from this condition, there is something that can be done. Over-the-counter steroid injections can stimulate the hair to grow again in those areas.
