8 Body Parts You’re Cleaning Too Often

Ears

Don’t rush into feeling grossed out, but you should know that earwax actually cleans your ears. Earwax collects dirt and debris, then it carries them out. If you scrap that protective goop from the ear canal, you’ll leave your ear unprotected.

Even more, otolaryngologist Dr. Erich Voigt, MD of NYU Langone Medical Center, explains how by putting a cotton swab in your ear, you might push that wax even further and then prevent it from being able to flow out naturally.

As the wax is continually produced, it rolls in on itself and becomes larger, deeper, thicker, and denser with time. A buildup could give you hearing trouble or an ear infection, so it’s best to keep cotton swabs and fingers away from your ear.
