Carotid artery screenings
Physicians can use ultrasounds to screen the carotid arteries (there’s one on each side of the neck) to detect carotid artery disease, which occurs when plaque builds up in the artery, limiting blood flow. Fat, cholesterol and other substances can cause plaque. For the test, the patient lies face up on an exam table, then turns to one side to ensure an optimal quality of the images. A clear gel is applied to the area of the body being studied, and an ultrasound technologist or radiologist places a transducer on the skin, moving it over the area being examined. You don’t need this screening unless your doctor recommends it.
