7 Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes You May Miss

3. You’ve lost a little weight

As surprising as it sounds, unintentional or sudden weight loss could be a sign of diabetes, even if being overweight is actually a risk factor for type 2 diabetes.

That’s mainly because “weight loss comes from two things,” explains Dr. Cypess. “One, from the water that you lose [from urinating]. Two, you lose some calories in the urine and you don’t absorb all the calories from the sugar in your blood.”

However, if you have unintentionally lost more than 5 percent of your normal body weight, or more than 10 lbs (4.5 kg) in 6–12 months or less, you should call your doctor as soon as possible.
