How many people have died?

As of the writing of this article, a total of 361 people have died from coronavirus, all located in China except for one case in the Philippines where one of its citizens has died from the infection. The reported death rate — the percentage of people diagnosed who end up dying from it — is currently estimated at 2.17 percent, according to the Australian Department of Health.

That’s less than SARS. The WHO says just over 8,000 people became ill with SARS and of those, 774 people sadly lost their lives — a rate of 9.6 percent.
