Suicide
The most recent data shows that more than 6,000 veterans have taken their own lives every year between 2008 and 2017; the rate of suicide among veterans was 1.5 times higher than the non-veteran population. More than two-thirds of male vets used a gun.
“When they say they want to kill themselves, they’re probably a lot more likely to be able to use that gun in a way that’s lethal, than someone else who doesn’t have firearm training,” says Olenik.
