4. Chronic coughing

If a cough is associated with a cold a respiratory infection, it will probably go away in a couple of weeks, but if you experience a persistent cough that has nothing to do with flu season, you should call your doctor. According to Santosh Kesari, MD, a board-certified neurologist and neuro-oncologist at the John Wayne Cancer Institute, a chronic cough is often one of the first symptoms of lung cancer.

You should also pay attention to any changes in your persistent cough, especially if you’re a heavy smoker—a deeper cough or a cough that sounds hoarse should really concern you. See your doctor if  your cough persists for longer than three weeks or occurs with other, more severe symptoms, such as coughing up blood.
