Are You a Sugar Addict? Don’t Worry…We’ve Got This!

We all have some days when we are eating too much sugar. This Halloween just passed and we are probably filled up with sugar, because the temptation it’s big and when we see those fancy candies in so many forms we can’t be stopped. We are buying different types of candies, cookies and sweets and we throw away the healthy food. Of course, if you eat sweets in moderation you don’t have to worry about it. The real problem is when you are eating a fistful of candy and your body takes it all. Don’t think just about the added calories, you can have serious stomach ache, feeling ill and shaky after a major serving of sugar.

Nutrition Director, Brierley Horton, MS, RD, explains: “When you binge on the sweet stuff, your body breaks sugar into glucose, which is released into your bloodstream. As a response, your body then releases insulin to help bring your sugar levels back down and help your cells ‘mop it up’. Whatever sugar your body doesn’t use gets stored as fat.”

Also, when you are eating too much sugar you feel hungry all the time and you crave more and more for sweets, this is a never ending cycle; not to mention that sugary foods are making your blood sugar levels spike. “Am I eating too much sugar?” – if the answer it’s yes, here’s what you have to do, starting today.

Protein and fiber

If you want to balance your blood sugar eat slow digesting fiber and protein. Don’t make the same mistake, because, if you do so, your blood sugar will probably crash and you will feel hungry all the time. If you are craving for a snack, there are many healthy options like an apple, a boiled egg, hummus, veggies or pistachios.

Yoga class

Eighty percent of people say that when they are eating more sweets, they feel stressed out. A recent study by the University of California, Davis, found that when stressed women drank a sugary beverage, their body’s response to stress was tempered. Attending to yoga classes will help you tame your stress.

Probiotic foods

A study from Oregon State University shows that the “bad” bacteria, which it’s found in your gut, feeds on sugar and can have an effect on your cognitive function. Next time when you will exaggerate with sugary foods, drink kombucha or eat some Greek yogurt, this will add you some “good” bacteria in your gut.
