5. Masks can help stop your germs from spreading
While face masks won’t keep you safe from viral illnesses, they may help guard others from any respiratory symptoms you may have, says Dr. Schaffner. The World Health Organization does advise wearing a mask if you’re coughing or sneezing.
That being said, if you do have symptoms, don’t go to work even if you do wear a mask. “It’s wrong thinking,” says Dr. Schaffner. “The masks will help prevent you from giving [an infection] to someone but it’s not enough to give you a license to go to work.”
