1. A communication plan
Sometimes a disaster can come with virtually no warning signs. That’s why is a good idea to keep a communication plan in case of a disaster. Let’s imagine this scenario: You are at work as well as your spouse and your kids are at school when a major disaster strikes.
“What is your plan to meet up, to reconnect with your loved ones?” asks Schlegelmilch. You should have a list of phone numbers in the kit. You should also include an actual place (perhaps a relative’s place) where people can gather if cell phones become unavailable.
Finally, you should make sure everyone in your family, including and especially your kids, know the plan by heart, advises Anthony Tornetta, a spokesperson for the American Red Cross.
