Ringworm
Dr. Haley says that ringworm can cause an itchy scalp, too. However, they are more common in children. This fungal infection can appear due to prolonged moisture on the scalp. Scaly, gray, or reddened areas, itchy scalp, tender and painful skin, and fragile hair are all signs and symptoms of ringworm.
In severe cases, ringworm of the scalp can lead to kerion, a painful inflammation of the scalp. Dr. Kronberg says that this fungal infection won’t respond to anything but oral antifungals. So, as soon as you notice at least two of the symptoms mentioned above, call your doctor to prescribe you the right treatment.
