8 Ways to Avoid Nightmares and Get More Restful Sleep

Don’t watch negative and scary videos

Well, a possible cause of nightmares may be watching horror movies or other scary videos. So, try to avoid these kinds of movies and focus on other TV series or videos that don’t involve horrifying scenes. “This sounds silly but it’s not! I know I watched ‘The Invisible Man’ a couple of weeks ago and definitely had a nightmare that night!” says Dr. Dasgupta.

Also, we have to admit that scary movies affect us differently, so if you think that you can’t watch such a movie, then don’t force yourself to see it just because your friends think it’s fun.

“We’re wired to develop some anxiety in response to a threat,” Sunny Volano, LPC, a licensed therapist who specializes in anxiety, tells Bustle. “While movies are not a real threat, they create the same fear in your brain, and it has trouble telling what’s real versus imaginary. Scary movies can cause someone to have nightmares because it triggers the fight or flight response.”

She also adds “these images can get stuck in your head and can lead someone with anxiety to feel fearful over what could happen to them or someone they love.”
