7. Sugar can bring about fatty liver.
Fructose, in particular, has been associated with a raised risk of developing fatty liver. Why fructose? Because it is entirely broken down by the liver.
It is transformed into energy in the liver or accumulated as glycogen (the main form in which glucose is stored in tissues). So far, so food, but the problem comes when you overburden your liver with way too much fructose.
When this happens, the condition is called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and it’s basically a fat buildup in the liver.
